2020 First Place
Start of Hop Harvest

An aerial top-down shot of a machine harvesting hops at night

A hop combine begins its first pass as the sun sets. This particular hop variety, Willamette, was determined to be mature just as the night shift came on. This photo was taken as the hop combine punched the first hole in this yard.

2020 Second Place
Power of the Peas

Staging pea crop for fungicide timing. Here we are evaluating peas for fungicide timing and application. Scouting for disease and pressure thresholds while enjoying the spring sunset.

2020 Third Place
Digging in the Dirt

A man kneeling in a field of soybean sprouts digging with a trowel

Soybean field assessment shortly after planting. Field walks and digging up plants is an everyday activity for an Agronomist, especially during spring. Here we are checking for emergence, planting depth, seedling health, and soil conditions. Soybeans are small but mighty and should push through this loamy and rich soil very well.

Beneficial Insect Application by Drone

A man kneeling in a field of green bean sprouts with a drone flying above and behind him

A View From Above

An aerial shot of a man and a tractor in a large field

Blue skies and calm sunny days are rare during springtime. Here I’m checking on plant population and the implementation of a variable rate fertilizer prescription I created for this field. The drone is utilized throughout the year to monitor for irregularities hard to spot from the ground.

In-furrow Starter Fertilizer Trial

A man with a clipboard standing in front of a tractor and behind a truck bed filled with plastic 2.5 gallon jugs

This replicated trial consists of 24 different treatments, including various fertilizer blends, soil microorganisms (bacteria, fungal species and mycorrhizae) and insecticides. The 4 row planter allows for precision seed placement, as each row unit has its own motor. Monitors in the tractor control the planter and fertilizer rates.

Harvest Never Ends

A machine and two pickup trucks from the 1940s or 1950s sit in a field

This serves as a reminder of how we did things in the past and that by acknowledging the fundamentals we can move forward in our self-development. It proves that even though things may be good we can and should always be striving for better as a person, professional and CCA.
